Buffaloes Charge to Victory Against Top-Ranked Competitors at Gans Creek – University of Colorado Athletics

The Colorado Buffaloes cross country teams had a strong showing at the Gans Creek Classic held in Columbia, Missouri. Both the men’s and women’s teams finished in third place, competing against several other nationally ranked squads.

Coach Sean Carlson praised the performance. “The men and women both ran fantastic team races,” he noted. “They not only competed but also beat many highly ranked teams.”

The women’s team, ranked 26th nationally, scored 166 points. They finished behind No. 12 Florida and No. 8 Northern Arizona, with a total of 32 teams in the race, including 11 ranked squads. Jessie Secor was a standout, finishing 17th with a time of 19:41.8. She made impressive strides in the race, moving up from the high 20s at the 1k mark.

Freshman Mia Larochelle also showed promise, crossing the finish line in 21st place at 19:46.8. Another newcomer, Hannah Prosser, followed closely, placing 22nd with a time of 19:47.8. Other notable finishes included Abbey Nechanicky in 33rd and Holly Barker in 73rd.

On the men’s side, Colorado, ranked 13th, finished with 126 points, securing third behind No. 1 Iowa State and No. 6 Virginia. Transfer Dominic Serem led the way, finishing 5th in 22:45.2 after maintaining a top position throughout the race. Isaiah Givens was 15th, while James Overberg made significant progress, moving from 116th to 30th, finishing at 23:06.8.

Both teams demonstrated their depth. The men’s squad had five finishers in the top 41, while the women had four in the top 35. This balance showcases a mix of young and experienced athletes, critical for success in future competitions.

Overall, the Buffaloes proved they could hold their own against tough competition. Carlson pointed out the positive impact of the new team members, stating, “They’ve really helped us make a 180, both in performance and culture.”

As the teams prepare for upcoming challenges, including the prestigious Nuttycombe Invitational in Wisconsin on October 17, they look to build on their recent success. With a combination of rising stars and seasoned runners, the future looks promising for the Buffaloes.
