WACO, Texas — In a nail-biter match, Colorado faced No. 20 Baylor but lost 2-1 due to a controversial call. The game wrapped up with a narrow margin and a video review that overturned a potential game-tying goal for Colorado in the 89th minute.
With this loss, Colorado’s record falls to 9-2-2 and 3-1-1 in Big 12 play, while Baylor rises to 9-1-2 overall and sits atop the conference at 4-1-0.
During the final moments, a ball sent by Jordan Nytes reached Faith Leyba, who seemed to score the equalizer. However, the officials ruled offside after reviewing the play, leaving the Buffaloes disappointed.
Head coach Danny Sanchez praised his team’s effort, saying, “I’m really proud of how we battled. It’s disappointing not to get the equalizer.” He appreciated the team’s performance, especially in the second half, where they showed determination.
The highlight for Colorado was Emerson Layne’s goal, which tied the game 1-1 in the second half. Caley Swierenga provided the assist for Layne’s goal, marking her sixth assist of the season. Goalkeeper Nytes made six saves during the match, keeping her team in contention.
“Layne had a great week,” Sanchez mentioned. “Her goal gave us a boost, but we lost that momentum quickly.” Aryanna Jimison led Baylor with both goals, securing their win.
In the first half, both teams tested each other’s defenses. Colorado’s Vivi Zacarias and Reagan Kotschau had shots, but they missed the target. In the 30th minute, Jimison scored for Baylor, creating pressure on the Buffaloes.
Lexi Meyer almost equalized for Colorado in the first half but was denied by Baylor’s goalkeeper, Azul Alvarez. Despite pushing hard, Colorado ended the first 45 minutes trailing 1-0.
The second half saw an immediate shift, with Layne finding the net 57 minutes in. Yet, Baylor quickly struck back, and Jimison scored again just three minutes later, regaining their advantage.
In the final minutes, Colorado pushed hard. However, after a review that negated their late goal, they couldn’t catch up, ending the match at 2-1.
“It was a typical Big 12 matchup. Baylor controlled the first half, but we made adjustments in the second,” Sanchez reflected. “We need to find better scoring opportunities moving forward.”
Looking forward, Colorado is set to host Arizona State on October 10 at 7 p.m. at Prentup Field.
