Colorado Women’s Golf Gears Up for Postseason Challenge
The Colorado women’s golf team is on the brink of an exciting postseason, starting with the Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship from April 23-25 at the Dallas Athletic Club. This championship marks a pivotal moment for the Buffaloes as they aim to secure a spot in the NCAA Regionals for the first time in eight years.
Currently, Colorado is the No. 11 seed in a 14-team field and sits at No. 47 in national rankings. Their season has been strong, featuring two tournament wins and two additional top-five finishes. This performance puts them in a promising position as they head into the championship.
Coach Madeleine Sheils emphasized the importance of treating each part of the season as its own story. “You have to take what you can from each chapter,” she said. This mindset is crucial as the team prepares for the challenging course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Known for its demanding layout, players will need to excel in ball striking and short game skills to succeed.
The championship will unfold over three rounds, and the Buffaloes are ready to tackle the course. “It’s about sticking to our game plan and staying calm,” Sheils noted. “We can’t play defense in golf. We need to focus on our game and maintain a positive mindset.”
Leading the team is junior Carolyn Fuller, ranked No. 145 nationally, boasting a stroke average of 72.79. She has consistently placed within the top 20 in tournaments, recently tying for seventh at the Chevron Silverado Showdown with an impressive score of 4-under-par.
Sophomore Ellen O’Shaughnessy follows closely with a stroke average of 73.64 and a remarkable 92% contribution toward team scores. Freshman Teemapat Pateetin and junior Maya McVey round out the lineup, bringing fresh talent and experience.
The camaraderie among team members plays a vital role in their success. “They truly support each other,” Coach Sheils shared. “It’s about trusting the work we’ve put in and enjoying these moments, particularly now as we enter this crucial phase.”
When they tee off Thursday, the Buffaloes will be paired with TCU and Texas Tech. The first round kicks off from the back of the course at 8:10 a.m. MT. Fans can look forward to the final round being streamed live on ESPN+.
As the team steps into this crucial championship, their hard work and dedication reflect a season built on trust, teamwork, and an unwavering desire to succeed. The Buffaloes are ready to write the final chapter of their season—one they hope will be a triumphant story of perseverance and achievement.
