Building a Sustainable Future: GCF and Asia-Pacific SIDS Unite for Bold Climate Action

More than 150 representatives from the Asia-Pacific region recently gathered in the Cook Islands to tackle the climate crisis. The aim? To pinpoint programming opportunities that can help their countries meet climate goals.

At the heart of this event was the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which hosted a Regional Dialogue. Attendees included representatives from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as the Pacific Islands, Maldives, and Timor-Leste. They shared their successes and challenges in working with the GCF and explored ways to strengthen partnerships and develop better project pipelines.

Mark Brown, the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, emphasized the importance of collaboration. He stated, “Our goal must be to create real impact on the ground— quicker and more sustainably.” According to Brown, the GCF is not just a funder; it’s a partner committed to understanding local realities and regional priorities.

The Dialogue provided a platform to discuss moving from mere conversation to concrete action. Ideas were co-created to ensure local ownership of solutions, focusing on the needs of communities and ecosystems alike.

Hemant Mandal, Director of GCF’s Asia Pacific Regional Department, praised the contributions of Pacific and Asian SIDS. He noted, “This region has always punched above its weight,” highlighting the significant investment—nearly 20%—of GCF’s Asia-Pacific portfolio directed towards this area.

A series of workshops during the event aimed to simplify access to climate finance and align it with the new Strategic Plan of the GCF. Participants included a diverse range of stakeholders—from government officials to civil society organizations—working in tandem to enhance regional climate efforts.

The urgency of climate action has never been clearer. Recent studies show that over 90% of Pacific Islands are already experiencing impacts from climate change, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events. This makes the work of the GCF and its partners even more crucial.

By fostering strong partnerships and facilitating shared learning, the GCF is paving the way for innovative solutions. These efforts not only reflect the voices of the Pacific but also contribute to a global climate agenda focused on sustainability and resilience.
