Building an Inclusive and Sovereign AI in India: Insights from Dharmendra Pradhan

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently emphasized the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India’s education system. Speaking at the Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026, he stated that AI in India will be designed to be inclusive, built on a strong foundation, and tailored to our unique needs.

The two-day event brought together policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss how AI can reshape education in India. Pradhan noted that AI can empower students and support teachers. He highlighted an ambitious plan to introduce age-appropriate AI education for nearly 300 million students across the country, starting from Class 3 up to advanced research levels.

The conclave aimed to lay the groundwork for the Bharat EduAI Stack. This initiative will create an open and flexible architecture for AI learning solutions in India. Pradhan stressed that AI isn’t just about technology; it’s about combining machine learning with human emotions to strengthen our global position.

The discussions focused on four key areas: AI for school education, higher education, workforce readiness, and deep technology research. There was also an exhibition showcasing AI innovations in education, allowing for valuable interactions between policymakers and tech innovators.

In a significant collaboration, IIT Bombay signed a memorandum of understanding with Columbia University to set up a Centre for AI in manufacturing. Additionally, IIM Lucknow launched three new AI courses, and partnerships were formed involving IIM Jammu and AIT Bangkok.

This conclave precedes the larger India AI Summit planned for February 2024, where tech giants like NVIDIA, OpenAI, Google, and Qualcomm will participate.

As AI continues to evolve, recent studies show that 85% of organizations believe AI will boost educational outcomes. This growing belief underlines the need for effective integration of AI in classrooms across the country. Embracing AI can truly transform the educational landscape, making learning more accessible and tailored to the needs of every student.
