Two doctors from Bulgaria recently spent nearly two weeks in El Paso, exploring how emergency medicine is taught and practiced at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso and University Medical Center. Dr. Gergana Voynova, a senior cardiology fellow from the Medical University of Sofia, traveled over 6,000 miles to learn about team-based emergency care in the region.
“My goal is to improve healthcare in cardiovascular and emergency medicine,” Voynova shared. She was genuinely impressed with the organization and collaboration she observed. “Everything is very well organized. People here work as a team, and I am really inspired by that.”
Dr. Voynova and her colleague, Dr. Petar Kalaidzhiev, who specializes in emergency medicine, shadowed various departments during their visit, including the emergency department and intensive care units. They were particularly struck by the hands-on training and simulation exercises that are a staple at TTHEP. “In Bulgaria, we don’t have a simulation center like this,” said Kalaidzhiev, expressing hope that the insights gained could improve training back home.
Studies show that teamwork in medical settings can significantly enhance patient outcomes. According to a 2022 report published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, hospitals with strong team dynamics see a 30% increase in efficiency during critical care incidents.
Dr. Radosveta Wells, who leads the residency program at TTHEP and is a graduate of the Sofia university, sees this exchange as a valuable opportunity. “Connecting with institutions around the world elevates our teaching and lets us learn from each other,” she noted.
Voynova believes the experience will benefit young doctors in Bulgaria, helping them act more swiftly in emergencies. “Every minute counts in critical situations,” she emphasized.
Officials at Texas Tech hope to extend this partnership, encouraging further collaboration to share training methods and best practices globally.
