ATHENS, Ga. — The Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer (BBBC) recently presented a generous donation of $245,000 to St. Mary’s Breast Health Services. This significant contribution was the result of various fundraising events throughout 2024.
Some of the fundraising highlights included the BBBC Charity Golf Classic held at The Georgia Club and the Currahee Golf Classic in Toccoa. Other events, like the 94.9 The Bull Girls with Guitars show and the Pink in the Rink UGA hockey game, also played a big role in raising these funds.
Jennifer Messer, St. Mary’s chief development officer, expressed gratitude for the support from BBBC, saying, “Their partnership is an inspiration for expanding our breast health services to those in need.” With this latest donation, BBBC has now contributed nearly $1.8 million to St. Mary’s over the years.
Dr. Kathleen Jeffery, medical director at St. Mary’s Breast Health Center, highlighted the importance of community support, stating, “Partners like BBBC are vital in our ongoing fight against breast cancer.” Together, they aim to improve lives across Northeast Georgia.
Jay Abbott, co-founder of BBBC, shared his appreciation for the community’s support. “We are touched by the love we receive,” he said. He encouraged continued efforts to fight cancer with the message, “Let’s get out there and beat cancer for good.”
BBBC was founded in October 2003 after Teresa Abbott was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. After months of treatment, she emerged cancer-free. Grateful for the support they received during this time, the Abbott family decided to help others facing similar battles. They initiated the first BBBC Charity Golf Tournament with the help of the UGA football team, leading to the establishment of BBBC.
Since 2009, BBBC has partnered with St. Mary’s Hospital to support breast cancer initiatives. Their donations have funded no-cost mammograms for uninsured women and helped purchase advanced imaging equipment, including 3-D mammography systems, in various locations.
