Elon, N.C. – The University of Richmond men’s tennis team had a strong start at the Elon Invitational this past weekend. Sophomore transfer Charlie Burdell stood out, winning three matches in singles and contributing to multiple doubles victories.
In Flight D singles, Burdell made a splash in his debut. He defeated Coastal Carolina’s Iannis Fernandes 6-3, 6-2, and took down South Carolina State’s Hoang Anh La Pham, who retired in the third set. Burdell also triumphed over Furman’s Nicolas Dispas in a tight match, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Nathan Germino, another Spider, had a solid showing with two wins in Flight D. He beat UNC Greensboro’s Sammy Presser 6-1, 7-6(6) and William Elmers 6-4, 5-7, [10-6] in his first collegiate matches.
Junior Grant Cohen also showcased his skills, posting two straight-set wins in Flight E. He defeated Furman’s Alex Han 6-2, 7-6(4) and Elon’s Luke Forester 6-3, 6-2. Additionally, Otto Sewell claimed a singles victory in Flight C against Barnabas Sift, winning 7(7)-6(4), 6-3.
In doubles, Burdell and Germino teamed up to secure two wins in Flight D. They beat Campbell’s Thomas Drapeau and Ethan Richardson 6-4, then took on Georgia Southern’s Landon Ecarma and Nicholas Snyder, winning 6-3. Cohen and Sewell also won in Flight C, overcoming South Carolina State’s Julius Augunas and Gabriel Johnson 7-5.
Looking ahead, the Spiders will compete again at the UNCG Invitational from September 19-21 in Greensboro, N.C.
