Staten Island is buzzing with excitement this summer as aspiring beekeepers get a chance to dive into urban beekeeping. Thanks to Bee University NYC, students aged 16-24 can apply for their Urban Beekeeping Fellowship, an engaging program designed to teach hands-on skills in beekeeping, leadership, and environmental issues.
The fellowship, now in its fourth year, runs for three months and offers more than just knowledge. Participants will receive financial compensation, including a stipend for transportation. They can even earn extra pay by attending additional sessions. In total, fellows can make up to $1,000, which includes $65 for each workshop and a $70 transportation stipend.
The program is divided into two cohorts: one in Brooklyn and another in Staten Island. Both cohorts will run from May to August, with sessions held in the afternoons. Participants will not only gain practical skills in beekeeping but also explore career paths in green jobs. This kind of experience is increasingly important; according to recent research, green jobs are expected to grow by 11 million by 2030, demonstrating a clear demand for environmentally-focused careers.
Bee University NYC aims to empower young people as advocates for the environment. As André Ware, the co-founder of the organization, states, “Beekeeping teaches responsibility and provides hands-on experience that directly connects to environmental leadership.”
Participants will also join discussions on current environmental issues, making it a timely endeavor given the rising concern over bee population declines. By engaging in local beekeeping, students can directly contribute to efforts that support these vital pollinators.
The application runs until late April, so if you’re interested, it’s a great time to submit your application. Even if students don’t meet the age criteria, Bee University NYC offers workshops and volunteer opportunities to get involved and learn more about urban beekeeping.
With support from various local organizations, the Urban Beekeeping Fellowship is poised to make a positive impact in the community. It’s a chance for young people not only to learn and earn but also to play an active role in fostering a sustainable environment.
