BWell Saginaw Program Receives Prestigious MDHHS Award for Transforming Community Health

SAGINAW, MI — The Saginaw County Health Department won the top honor at the Michigan Premier Public Health Conference for its innovative community health work in late October 2025. The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) recognized BWell Saginaw not just as a program, but as a collective effort involving 12 organizations. Their goal? To transform Saginaw into one of Michigan’s healthiest communities.

MDHHS praised BWell’s initiatives, which include the “Healthier Me” podcast and various programs in local schools focused on health and wellness. These efforts aim to create a culture where everyone, regardless of their background, can thrive. The department acts as a central hub for the BWell Partner Coalition, bringing together different sectors—like healthcare, education, and grassroots organizations—to work toward a shared vision.

Experts believe that the key to successful public health initiatives lies in collaboration. “What makes BWell Saginaw unique is its partnerships. This model shows that genuine collaboration is much more effective than competition,” said an MDHHS representative during the award presentation.

Saginaw’s health department walked away with a traveling trophy and $1,000 to support BWell programming, marking a significant step for community health in the area. The partner coalition includes local organizations such as Covenant HealthCare, MyMichigan Health, and the Saginaw Community Foundation.

These initiatives aren’t just changing lives; they’re also setting trends. For example, the “Healthier Me” podcast has gained popularity online, helping to spread positive health messages directly to residents.

In a recent survey conducted by the Health Department, 72% of participants reported feeling more engaged with community health programs, indicating a positive shift in community attitudes toward health.
