BYU QB Jake Retzlaff Faces Honor Code Suspension Amid Sexual Assault Allegation: Transfer Plans Confirmed

BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff is facing a potential seven-game suspension due to an honor code violation linked to a sexual assault allegation. This news comes from the Salt Lake Tribune. Retzlaff plans to transfer, as he has only one year of eligibility left.

He has denied the allegations made in a lawsuit filed in May, claiming that any sexual encounter he had was consensual. The specific issue at hand is his choice to engage in premarital sex, which, as per BYU’s strict honor code, is a violation. BYU, affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, enforces a policy requiring students to lead a “chaste and virtuous life.” Even though Retzlaff is not a member of the church, he is still held to these standards.

In the past, other BYU athletes have experienced similar consequences for honor code violations. NFL running back Jamaal Williams faced a whole season suspension in 2015 for violations related to his personal life.

The lawsuit against Retzlaff involves a woman, identified as Jane Doe A.G., who claims he sexually assaulted her at his home in 2023. She states that they initially engaged in consensual kissing, but she did not consent to further actions. According to her, after repeatedly telling him to stop, he continued. It’s important to note that this allegation has not led to criminal charges against Retzlaff.

Retzlaff has filed a legal response, claiming that he only engaged in consensual activities and suggesting that the lawsuit aims to extort money from him now that he is being seen as a potential NFL prospect. The woman seeks at least $300,000 in damages for battery, assault, and emotional distress.

Retzlaff’s situation highlights broader issues related to college athlete conduct and the strict codes governing their behavior. Last year, a survey by the NCAA found that nearly 90% of college athletes were aware of their school’s conduct policies, yet many remain uncertain about what constitutes a violation. This lack of clarity can lead to unintended breaches of conduct and significant consequences for athletes.

While Retzlaff’s football skills on the field were impressive, leading his team to an 11-2 season, off-field issues like this can overshadow athletic achievements. His case serves as a reminder of the complex structures around college sports and the importance of understanding and complying with institutional regulations.
