SALT LAKE CITY — Utah could soon host an underground nuclear reactor from Deep Fission, a California-based energy company. In September, the company announced plans for testing its small modular reactors in Utah, Texas, and Kansas.
Deep Fission’s reactors will be placed about a mile underground. This depth offers natural protection, which the company claims enhances safety and reduces costs. Liz Muller, co-founder and CEO, highlighted the urgent need for reliable, carbon-free energy. She emphasized collaboration with these states to meet this growing demand.
Recently, Deep Fission reached a significant milestone by breaking ground on its first site in Parsons, Kansas. However, the specific location for Utah’s reactor is still not disclosed.
Utah has shown a strong interest in nuclear energy. Governor Spencer Cox and state lawmakers believe it is essential for meeting the state’s energy needs. In November, Cox unveiled a partnership to create a comprehensive nuclear energy system in Brigham City. This effort is part of the “Operation Gigawatt” initiative, aimed at boosting overall energy production in Utah.
Stuart Adams, the president of the Utah Senate, echoed this sentiment, stressing the necessity for more energy as the demands on resources increase. Part of this focus is on supporting data centers critical for advancements in artificial intelligence. Millard County is preparing to host two large AI-ready data centers, one of which will be the largest data center campus globally.
Deep Fission’s plans include powering these data centers. According to recent filings, the company can provide substantial power, which is ideal for energy-intensive needs. This move aligns with a broader push from the federal government to promote nuclear energy through pilot programs.
As Utah progresses in its nuclear energy ambitions, it looks set to play a crucial role in the nation’s energy future.
