California Governor Gavin Newsom has assured residents that there’s no immediate threat to the state, even after the FBI issued a warning about potential drone attacks from Iran. This warning, described as “unverified information,” has raised concerns, but officials are mostly downplaying the risk.
Newsom emphasized the importance of being prepared for worst-case scenarios, stating, “We have been aware of that information.” He reassured that while drone threats are taken seriously, there’s currently no actionable intelligence indicating a specific plot.
The FBI alert indicated that Iran might intend to use drones launched from an unidentified vessel off the U.S. coast in retaliation for the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the U.S. However, the alert lacked details on timing, targets, or methods of any possible attack.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed the sentiment that no credible threat currently exists. She pointed out that this information was based on “unverified intelligence.”
Brian Kohlhepp, a former FBI agent and expert on crime and security, explained that such bulletins are routine. They serve to keep local law enforcement aware of potential threats. He noted that if a situation required urgent attention, FBI communication would be much more direct, often through calls or meetings.
Police departments in San Francisco and Los Angeles are actively monitoring the situation but stress that they are in close contact with federal authorities.
In recent years, heightened security alerts have become common as global tensions rise. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, over 70% of Americans expressed concern about the potential for drone attacks and other forms of warfare affecting their safety.
