California Governor Gavin Newsom has stirred some controversy with his recent comments on transgender athletes. In a new podcast, he expressed that he believes it is “deeply unfair” for transgender women and girls to compete in women’s sports. This viewpoint contrasts sharply with many within his party.
Newsom, a potential presidential candidate in 2028, spoke candidly on his podcast with conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. He stated, “I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that.” His remarks come at a time when Democrats are reflecting on their political losses, particularly regarding cultural discussions that may have hurt them at the polls last November.
His comments drew immediate criticism from several Democrats. The California LGBT legislative caucus issued a statement saying they were “profoundly sickened and frustrated” by Newsom’s stance. Moreover, Newsom’s podcast episode featured Kirk, who leads an organization that promotes conservative views on college campuses. They discussed the electoral defeat of Kamala Harris, with Newsom noting how his party struggled with perceptions about transgender issues during the campaign.
He recalled a powerful Trump campaign ad that framed the issue in simple terms, claiming it had a significant impact on voter perception. “It was devastating,” Newsom remarked, pointing out that Harris didn’t respond effectively to the concerns raised.
Kirk argued that many in the Democratic Party are out of touch with everyday Americans when it comes to the issue of transgender athletes. Newsom acknowledged that he values fairness in sports, affirming, “So, the issue of fairness is completely legit.” He also highlighted that he struggles with how some people demean vulnerable communities.
Responses from other Democratic leaders varied widely. Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot criticized Newsom for his comments, calling them “disgusting.” On the other hand, moderate Congressman Seth Moulton supported him, suggesting that people are finally willing to voice what they’ve always believed about this issue. Polling data from earlier this year revealed that a significant portion of both Republicans and many Democrats oppose letting transgender female athletes compete in women’s sports.
Throughout his career, Newsom has been a progressive advocate for LGBT rights. He gained nationwide attention in 2004 when, as the mayor of San Francisco, he initiated same-sex marriage licenses despite the law forbidding it at that time. He has also championed policies protecting transgender youth and inclusive curriculums that teach LGBT history in schools.
Last year, he made headlines again by signing legislation that ensured school districts would not have to inform parents if a student changed their gender identity, solidifying California’s status as a leader in LGBT rights.
