SpaceX faced a challenge on April 23, 2006, when the FCC rejected its request for access to a Mobile Satellite Service spectrum. This spectrum is crucial for a technology known as direct-to-device (D2D). D2D allows smartphones to connect directly to satellites, similar to how they connect to cell towers.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX is working on its Starlink Mobile service, aiming to provide D2D capabilities. This service, launched on July 23, 2025, began with messaging features and later expanded to offer broadband data.
However, SpaceX is not alone in this venture. Other companies like AT&T and Verizon are also exploring satellite texting options through partnerships with AST SpaceMobile and Skylo, respectively.
The FCC laid the groundwork for this technology on March 14, 2024, by adopting a framework called Supplemental Coverage from Space. This allows satellite firms to lease spectrum from terrestrial carriers, filling in any coverage gaps. Later, on November 26, 2024, the FCC authorized SpaceX’s partnership with T-Mobile, marking a significant regulatory victory for the company.
Recently, SpaceX completed a $17 billion acquisition of wireless spectrum from EchoStar, enhancing its ability to negotiate with other global carriers. Despite the FCC’s setbacks, there is still a strong push for satellite connectivity, with SpaceX aiming for speeds of 150 Mbps per user compared to just 4 Mbps today.
Looking at the bigger picture, this isn’t just about connectivity. With a potential IPO valuing SpaceX at $1.75 trillion, every regulatory decision, carrier agreement, and technological advancement is crucial.
