Employees at California’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are facing uncertainty as layoffs loom amid a government shutdown. JPL, a hub for robotic space exploration and satellite technology, is funded by NASA and overseen by the California Institute of Technology.

Officials have confirmed that some layoffs are expected this month, though they haven’t shared specific numbers. Currently, JPL employs around 5,500 people, following two rounds of layoffs last year that affected 855 positions.

A report from NASAwatch.com suggested that layoffs could reach as high as 4,000, but this claim was quickly dismissed by local representatives. Rep. Judy Chu clarified that this figure was “vastly incorrect.” JPL officials reiterated that they have been open about the possible layoffs but stressed that the numbers being discussed are exaggerated.

The current situation hinges on the ongoing budget standoff in Congress, which has caused the U.S. government to shut down. Although JPL workers haven’t been furloughed because they are employees of CalTech, the lab’s work relies heavily on federal funding.

Earlier this year, budget discussions proposed a significant $6 billion cut to NASA’s $24.8 billion budget, heavily impacting planetary and Earth-observation missions. Recent appropriations proposals have moderated these cuts but still reflect differing priorities. The House bill maintains NASA’s budget level but reallocates funds, while the Senate bill keeps funding for the Science Mission Directorate stable at $7.3 billion.

The uncertainty surrounding funding has left JPL employees in a challenging position. Many have turned to social media, like Reddit, to voice their concerns. One employee summed up the sentiment: “This state of uncertainty is too much to deal with.”
