The warm winter in California has left the Sierra Nevada with surprisingly little snow. An extreme heat wave is now speeding up the snowmelt, creating concerns for the state.
Currently, California’s snowpack is only at 48% of the average for this time of year. Just a few months ago, in late February, it was 73%. This drastic change puts additional stress on California’s water supply, as about 30% of the state’s water comes from the Sierra snowpack.
Water expert Newsha Ajami recently saw the effects firsthand. While skiing near Lake Tahoe, she noticed that many ski lifts were closed due to lack of snow. “It was kind of scary,” she remarked, noting the bare slopes.
Recent data show that this year’s warmer weather has resulted in more rain than snow. Climate change is affecting snowfall patterns, raising snow lines in the mountains and altering when snowmelt occurs. This winter’s warmer temperatures have exacerbated the risk of extreme heat waves as well.
The snowpack usually peaks around April 1. However, this year, it began shrinking early, and experts predict more rapid snow loss as the heat wave continues, bringing record-high temperatures to areas like Los Angeles and Palm Springs.
According to the National Weather Service, the heat wave poses risk of heat stress and hazardous conditions along rivers. Areas like the southern Sierra have a snowpack at 71% of average, while the northern Sierra is just 28%.
On a positive note, reservoir levels are thriving. Thanks to previous years of high runoff, they stand at 122% of average. Nonetheless, Ajami warns that this abundance doesn’t guarantee long-term water security.
She leads a new program at Stanford University focusing on adapting to extreme weather. Ajami emphasizes the importance of rethinking California’s water management system. “The cycle we rely on has changed, and we need to adapt our infrastructure to these new conditions,” she explained.
In addition to changing dam operations, Ajami mentions the importance of restoring forests and mountain meadows to help absorb and store water. Another concern is the Colorado River, which supplies Southern California, facing its own challenges from a long-term drought.
Experts like Daniel Swain, a climate scientist, point out that this year’s record warmth is part of a larger trend. With some states experiencing temperatures more than 3 degrees above average, the signature of climate change is becoming more apparent. Less snow and quicker melting means adjustments are needed to manage water resources effectively.
As the climate continues to shift, understanding how to adapt our water systems will be crucial for the state’s future.
