Calling All High School Innovators: Join the Exciting Youth Science Contest! – My Edmonds News

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) is excited to announce the fourth annual Youth Science Contest, open to high school students across the state. This contest is a great chance for students to dive into health and environmental data from their local communities, all while building their science and communication skills.

Jennifer Sabel, the WTN Manager, shared, “This contest has been a huge success because it helps students not only analyze data but also use that knowledge to make a real impact. Since we started, participation has more than tripled!”

Students can select one of three project tracks:

• Health Science: Examine WTN data to uncover patterns, impacts, or disparities.
• Science Communication: Utilize WTN data to spotlight an important issue and create a message to raise awareness or inspire action.
• Program and Policy Design: Propose a public policy or work with a local organization to enhance a program using WTN resources.

To successfully complete their projects, students will need to incorporate WTN data, ensure an equity-focused analysis, present clear visuals, and reflect on their learning experience. The contest timeline runs from February 15 to April 15, giving students two months to showcase their ideas.

All interested students must register and submit their projects by midnight on April 15. For more information, including helpful resources and project examples, visit the WTN contest page.

A team of DOH public health experts will judge the projects, with winners announced in late May. Winning students will receive a plaque and have their work showcased on DOH’s social media and WTN’s website. First-place winners will also gain valuable insights through a mentoring session with an expert to further develop their projects.
