Calls for Bharat Ratna: Muslim Organizations Urge PM Modi to Honor Kerala Scholar Who Aided Indian Nurse’s Freedom in Yemen

Muslim groups in India are urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honor Maulana Sheikh Abubakar Musliyar with the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian award. Sheikh Musliyar, a respected Islamic scholar and the honorary ‘Grand Mufti’ of India, has made significant contributions to humanitarian causes.

At 94 years old, Musliyar recently played a crucial role in delaying the execution of a Kerala nurse named Nimisha Priya in Yemen. She had been sentenced to death, but thanks to Musliyar’s intervention, the execution set for July 16, 2025, has been postponed. Nimisha was convicted of murdering her former business partner, who she accused of abuse and confinement after seizing her passport.

Mohammed Saeed Noori, president of the Raza Academy in Mumbai, spoke highly of Musliyar’s efforts.
