It has been over two years since the university announced it would make major changes to its mental health services after several student deaths. A report revealed that these services were “ineffective.” In response, the university is now taking a significant step forward.
They are establishing a new professorship at St Catharine’s College to lead research in mental health. The role focuses on developing fresh insights into interventions and neuroscience. This research aims to improve mental health treatments and prevention methods.
Mrs. Dawson expressed excitement about the university’s commitment to becoming a leader in mental health research for young people. She believes this position will greatly enhance the understanding and development of new mental health interventions.
Professor Jeffrey W. Dalley added that this initiative will significantly boost efforts to study the brain science behind mental health issues in young people. Natalie Acton, co-head of student support, also shared her enthusiasm, stating that having such a position in Cambridge is amazing. She looks forward to collaborating with the new professor to enhance student support services.
Recruitment for the position is currently underway, with hopes for the new professor to start in October.
