Cameron Maybin Advocates for Yankees to Pursue Tarik Skubal: ‘No Excuses About Payroll!’

Could Tarik Skubal land with the Yankees? Former Yankees outfielder Cameron Maybin thinks so. He believes that acquiring the Detroit Tigers’ star pitcher could make the Yankees a dominant force in baseball.

In a recent post on X, Maybin mentioned that while other players like Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger might shake things up, Skubal would be the game-changer the Yankees need. Maybin knows a thing or two about trades; he was part of a big deal between the Tigers and Marlins in 2007 that sent Miguel Cabrera to Detroit.

Maybin criticized the Tigers’ management for not securing Skubal’s future. “They clearly don’t want to pay him, or they would have done it by now,” he said. Skubal is 29 years old and has emerged as one of the best pitchers in the league. In 2025, he won his second consecutive American League Cy Young Award, finishing the season with a remarkable 2.21 ERA.

It’s worth noting that Skubal also had an impressive 2024 season. He clinched the AL Triple Crown by leading the league in wins, ERA, and strikeouts. Despite this success, the Tigers have been reluctant to offer him a contract that meets his market value, prompting rumors about potential trades.

Recent reports indicate that the negotiations between Skubal’s camp and the Tigers are off by as much as $250 million. This gap has fuelled speculation about teams looking to acquire him.

Interestingly, Skubal himself seems dismissive of the trade hype. He recently commented, “It’s all out of my control… It’s not like I want to be traded.” His focus remains on his performance, regardless of the trade rumors.

Maybin believes pairing Skubal with other star pitchers could create a nightmare scenario for opposing teams. “Imagine him, Sandy Alcantara, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Rodón in the same rotation,” Maybin said. “That’s a playoff contender right there.”

The conversation around trades like Skubal’s shows how delicate the game can be. Teams must balance talent, future potential, and payroll, but for fans and analysts alike, it’s fascinating to watch these dynamics unfold.
