Camilla Luddington recently opened up about her journey with Hashimoto’s disease. In a chat with PEOPLE at the 2025 Inspiration Awards, she shared how her life has shifted since her diagnosis. It’s a lot to take in, especially since she found out just a few months ago.

The 42-year-old actress explained that she’s still learning how to manage this autoimmune disorder, which affects the thyroid gland. “I started treatment with Levothyroxine,” she said, “and I already feel some changes.” One major improvement? Less inflammation and more energy.

“I used to feel puffy and tired all the time,” she recalled. Now, she’s back at the gym, lifting weights. “I feel more like myself again,” she added. Luddington also mentioned how self-care has become a big part of her routine. She’s now more conscious about her diet, particularly avoiding gluten.

This diagnosis has also given her clarity about some troubling symptoms she’d experienced. “I had a lot of brain fog,” she said. “Now, I know it came from my thyroid issues.” Understanding her condition has made a big difference in her life, especially in being present with her family and at work.

Luddington, who has a daughter and a son with her husband, shared her story on a podcast with her Grey’s Anatomy co-star, Jessica Capshaw. She often joked about feeling tired, never realizing there was an underlying medical issue. Routine blood tests finally helped pinpoint her diagnosis.

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of Hashimoto’s disease can include fatigue, weight gain, and mood swings. Research shows this disorder is becoming more common, affecting about 1 in 300 people in the U.S., particularly women.

Experts emphasize the importance of listening to one’s body. Luddington’s experience highlights that it’s crucial not to ignore persistent fatigue or other unusual symptoms. Feeling tired all the time may seem normal for many, but it could be a sign of something more serious.
