GREENVILLE, N.C. — Camping World, a national RV dealer, is facing fines for flying a massive American flag in Greenville. The city started issuing citations last Wednesday, with fines increasing for each violation. The first was $50, the second $100, and any additional fines are $250.
As of today, Camping World has received six citations, totaling $1,150 in fines. The company installed a 120-foot flagpole that holds a flag nearly 15 times larger than what is allowed in non-residential areas. According to city regulations, flagpoles can’t exceed 70 feet.
Camping World’s CEO, Marcus Lemonis, is standing firm. He announced on social media, “You can fine me all you want City of Greenville North Carolina. #NoAmericanFlagIsTooBig.” He has shown no intention of taking down the flag.
The city council previously denied a request from Camping World to keep the flag up, stating that the company was aware of the violations when they raised it. The city is actively issuing citations as long as the flag remains, and they have also requested that the flagpole be removed.
Greenville hasn’t taken legal action against Camping World yet to enforce the fines. This isn’t the first time Camping World has faced fines for large flags. Before, cities in California changed their zoning laws after the company paid fines related to oversized flags.
