Indy Hoosiers Gear Up for Rival Showdown Against Purdue
As the Indiana Hoosiers prepare to face rival Purdue, coach Darian DeVries emphasizes the importance of scoring. “We have to make shots,” he says, reflecting on his team’s recent struggles. After a disappointing loss to Illinois, the Hoosiers (17-9 overall, 8-7 in the Big Ten) need to step up against the Boilermakers (21-5, 11-4).
“We need to play very well,” DeVries states. Purdue is a tough opponent, especially at home. The Hoosiers previously beat Purdue at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, and now they aim to replicate that success at Mackey Arena.
In basketball, winning the second matchup requires a blend of old techniques and new strategies. “They’ll adjust to our previous game,” DeVries explains. “So, we need to change things up while still focusing on the basics, like turnovers and rebounding.”
Player Sam Alexis is a key factor. He’s been on a scoring streak, contributing significant points and rebounds in recent games. DeVries highlights the goal of giving Alexis more opportunities in the post. “We want to get him in positions where he can score one-on-one,” he says.
Another standout is Lamar Wilkerson. His scoring average of 24.2 points in Big Ten play is remarkable; it’s on track to be one of the best for the Hoosiers in decades.
Purdue, despite their recent loss to Michigan, has shown strong performance this season. Their last home losses were against formidable teams—potential Final Four contenders. Their star guard, Braden Smith, is closing in on the NCAA all-time assist record, ranking fifth in history. In their earlier meeting, Indiana managed to contain him, thanks in part to guard Conor Enright’s efforts.
Purdue’s roster also boasts forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, who has been a solid contributor on both ends of the court. Meanwhile, Fletcher Loyer leads the team in three-pointers, making Purdue a triple-threat.
Despite recent setbacks, the Hoosiers have won five out of their last seven games. To secure a spot in the NCAA tournament, consistency is key. “It’s all about the next game,” DeVries insists.
As the rivalry heats up, both teams will need to bring their best. For Indiana, the focus is clear—stay confident and trust the process.
