ST. JOHN’S, NL — On January 15, 2026, Julie Dabrusin, Canada’s Environment Minister, announced a new initiative aimed at combatting climate change. A total of $7.1 million will go towards 80 climate adaptation projects across Canada. This funding is designed to help local governments create strategies that protect communities and infrastructure from climate-related threats.
This initiative, known as the Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation (LLCA), aims to develop risk assessments and beneficial adaptation plans. The goal is to enhance community resilience amid rising climate challenges. “Every dollar invested in adaptation today saves communities many more in recovery costs tomorrow,” said Rebecca Bligh, the President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).
Canada is already seeing the effects of climate change. Floods, wildfires, and extreme heat are just a few challenges communities face today. According to a recent report by the Government of Canada, 90% of Canadians believe climate change is a significant threat to public safety. This funding aims to equip municipalities with the necessary tools to manage these issues effectively.
The breakdown of the funding shows a widespread effort across regions. For instance, the Prairies will receive funds for 25 projects totaling nearly $1.8 million, while British Columbia will get funding for four projects amounting to $817,700. This geographical diversity ensures that communities, regardless of their size or location, can find ways to adapt.
“Canada’s municipalities are on the front lines of climate change, and they need tools to adapt and thrive,” added Dabrusin. The funding supports not just planning but real-world implementation of projects that will help strengthen communities. This initiative reflects a growing trend across the globe, with many cities stepping up to combat climate impacts.
For local leaders, the LLCA Initiative offers a chance to put plans into action. According to the FCM, this approach not only addresses immediate climate concerns but also builds a foundation for a greener, more resilient economy in the future.
In essence, the LLCA funding represents a timely investment in community safety and resilience, ensuring that Canada’s municipalities are prepared for the challenges ahead. To explore more about the program, visit the Green Municipal Fund’s website.
