Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s Visit to Delhi: A Key Meeting with India’s Jaishankar

New Delhi:

Canada’s Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, touched down in India on Sunday. This is her first trip since taking office in May, and she’s here for important talks with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar.

The main focus of their discussions will be to strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, and security. Anand is also set to meet Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to explore ways to enhance trade between the two nations. “This visit aims to revitalize our bilateral ties and deepen economic cooperation,” said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry.

Anand’s visit comes after a recent trip to New Delhi by Canada’s National Security Advisor, Nathalie Drouin. That meeting tackled various concerns and paved the way for Anand’s discussions.

A significant shift in India-Canada relations occurred after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 Summit in June. This was vital because relations had soured following serious allegations made by then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2023 about India’s possible involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India refuted these claims, and tensions escalated, leading to expelling diplomats on both sides.

However, since Carney’s election victory, there’s been a renewed push to rebuild trust. Both nations have restored diplomatic personnel and are keen on reviving collaborations across various fields.

After her meetings in India, Anand will continue her tour to Singapore and China. In Singapore, she’ll meet with Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, aiming to strengthen ties in Southeast Asia. In China, she’ll engage with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, marking 55 years of diplomatic relations.

This visit is a clear sign of commitment from both nations to work together despite past tensions, laying the groundwork for future collaborations.
