Canyon Fire Update: Containment Reaches 28% as Brush Fire Rages Near Lake Piru

The Canyon Fire, spanning over 5,370 acres near Lake Piru, is currently 28% contained, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. This fire is being fueled by dry brush, high temperatures, and strong winds.

Firefighters continue to face challenges due to the rough terrain and low humidity. Despite these tough conditions, they managed to limit the fire’s growth to just over 500 acres. Their hard work allowed officials to lower evacuation alerts in some areas.

Sadly, three firefighters sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital. Fortunately, they are expected to recover fully. Andrew Dowd from Ventura County Fire emphasized the ongoing risk, saying, “The fire is still burning. We’ll remain vigilant until we get it under control.”

A bright spot amidst the chaos is that no homes have been lost, a testament to the tireless efforts of first responders. Local resident Mike Kavathas praised the firefighters, stating, “They’ve saved us a lot of times. I really appreciate them.”

As the fire continues, evacuation warnings are in place for several nearby communities. For now, Castaic High School is closed due to the proximity of the fire.

It’s worth noting that wildfires have been increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change. According to a report by the National Interagency Fire Center, wildfires burned more land in the U.S. in 2021 than in any year since 2017. This highlights the importance of continued support for firefighting resources and community preparedness.
