The University of Alabama is rolling out an exciting new initiative called Capstone Convergence. This plan aims to replace outdated administrative systems for finance and human resources with a modern, cloud-based platform. University officials believe this update will make work smoother, boost data security, and give staff and faculty easier access to the information they need for better decision-making.
The current system, Ellucian Banner, has been in use for over 20 years. The transition kicks off with a recommendation for Workday as the new platform. This single, cloud-based system will reduce reliance on older tools and make updates quicker and more secure.
In the first phase, the focus will be on planning and readiness. This includes setting up a governance structure, reviewing current business processes, and creating a change management plan to guide staff training. Support will come from Huron Consulting Group and a committee of faculty and staff across the campus.
Dan Layzell, the vice president of Finance and Operations, stated, “This project is a way to reimagine how we work together to support UA’s mission.” Updating systems is expected to lead to continuous improvement and smarter decision-making.
Mike Shelton, the chief information officer, likened the process to upgrading from a flip phone to a smartphone. He emphasized that the update will help the university work more efficiently and make faster, data-driven choices.
Future phases will also focus on upgrading the Student Information System, but the initial effort will enhance systems that support financial and workforce operations. This initiative aims to consolidate outdated applications and simplify processes, providing a stronger technological foundation for teaching, research, and community service.
Faculty and staff will have opportunities to participate in design sessions and training. The project team will keep everyone informed with regular updates and resources to help ease the transition.
