Cardinals’ Running Back Shuffle: Trey Benson Lands on IR – What This Means for the Team

When James Conner went down with a foot injury, it seemed like it would be Trey Benson’s chance to shine as a starting running back. But now, Benson is facing his own setback. Coach Jonathan Gannon announced that Benson is headed to Injured Reserve due to a knee injury he suffered in the game against the Seahawks. He’ll be out for at least four games, which is another hit to an offense that has struggled this season.

Gannon mentioned that he believes Benson might have played through the injury initially. It wasn’t until Friday morning that Benson indicated something was wrong. ESPN reported that he has undergone arthroscopic surgery, which adds more uncertainty to his return.

To fill the gap, the team signed Michael Carter from the practice squad. He joins Emari Demercado and Bam Knight in the backfield. When asked who would start, Gannon replied, “we’ll see how the week goes.”

He emphasized that everyone needs to step up. “I’m comfortable with the guys taking on these roles,” he stated, highlighting the importance of team unity during tough times.

In addition to Carter, the Cardinals also signed veteran D’Ernest Johnson to the practice squad and brought in running back Jermar Jefferson on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, defensive lineman Darius Robinson is nursing a chest injury and won’t practice for now. The team is monitoring his condition closely.

There have been other roster changes as well. The Cardinals re-signed cornerback Jaden Davis to the practice squad while releasing Ekow Boye-Doe. On a related note, offensive lineman Jake Curhan was signed by the Carolina Panthers from the Cards’ practice squad.
