Child Neglect Case in Carroll County
Two parents from Carroll County, Jason and Kira Askea, face serious charges after their three young children were found living in shocking conditions. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office reported that the couple was arrested for first-degree cruelty to children.
In July, deputies responded to a campsite at Little Tallapoosa Park after a concerned caller alerted them to two children who looked malnourished and were allegedly covered in feces. When officers arrived, they discovered three young children—a 2-year-old, a 4-year-old, and a 5-year-old—inside a tent that appeared to have been used for a long time. The children were dirty and in poor condition.
The 2-year-old child, who has Down Syndrome, was particularly vulnerable. According to the sheriff’s office, he could not support his body, hold his head up, or even crawl, walk, or feed himself. His developmental stage was similar to that of a 12-month-old. Disturbingly, he also suffered from untreated seizures, which affected his brain function in ways that medical professionals described as irreversible.
All three children showed signs of dental neglect. Family members, living in a nearby camper, revealed that the family had been staying in the tent for an extended period.
Both parents were booked into the Carroll County Jail in September and have been denied bond. Cases like this highlight ongoing issues around child safety and welfare. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 400,000 children were in foster care in 2021 due to neglect or abuse, underscoring the critical need for vigilance and community support.
Community reactions have been intense, with many expressing outrage and concern. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of looking out for vulnerable children. It’s a stark reality that not all children have the care they deserve.
