For the second consecutive year, HBO Max celebrated a big win at the Emmys. Last year, it took home the award for Outstanding Comedy Series for Hacks. This year, the honor for Outstanding Drama Series went to The Pitt, which faced fierce competition from Apple TV+’s most nominated show, Severance.
Casey Bloys, the CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, expressed his excitement about The Pitt‘s success. “It was a huge night for The Pitt,” he said during the post-Emmy celebration.
HBO Max tied with Netflix for the most Emmy wins this year, racking up 30 awards, including five for The Pitt. This show, created by the makers of ER, has found a unique niche with a broadcast-type model—featuring larger seasons and quicker turnaround times. Bloys highlighted this approach, noting that The Pitt will return for a second season in January 2026, exactly a year after its premiere.
Surprise Wins and Snubs
Amid the celebratory atmosphere, Somebody Somewhere‘s Jeff Hiller received an unexpected Emmy for his role, sparking joy among fans of the show. Similarly, Hannah Einbinder won her first Emmy for her performance in Hacks, which continues to shine after four successful seasons.
However, not every prediction held true. Colin Farrell did not win for his role in The Penguin, and The White Lotus was shut out despite numerous nominations. Bloys noted that The White Lotus might have faced stiff competition due to its own success.
HBO’s Continued Dominance
David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, praised Bloys during the Emmy festivities. Bloys has led HBO since 2016, and the network consistently earns recognition in top scripted categories nearly every year, with the pandemic year being an exception.
Reflecting on HBO’s success, Bloys stated, “It’s not one show that wins everything; it’s consistency across genres.” This might be why HBO’s diverse offerings, including documentaries and comedies, continue to thrill audiences and voters alike.
Upcoming Shows and Seasons
Looking ahead, fans can expect exciting developments from HBO. The White Lotus is confirmed to head to France for its fourth season. Bloys also hinted at the possibility of Nicolas Cage starring in the fifth season of True Detective, although nothing is set in stone yet.
Further down the line, House of the Dragon is expected back in summer 2026, while Euphoria aims for a spring release. Bloys acknowledged the challenges of scheduling with its star-studded cast but expressed excitement for the upcoming season.
As HBO gears up for the 2026 Emmys, they have already launched two potential contenders: The Gilded Age and a limited series called Task. With promising projects on the horizon, Bloys remains optimistic about what the future holds for HBO Max and the quality content it delivers.
This consistent output of top-tier programming keeps viewers engaged and positions HBO Max well for continued success in the ever-competitive streaming landscape.
