DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Helio Castroneves, a four-time Indy 500 winner, is set to race in the Daytona 500 as the 41st driver. A new rule allows a “world-class driver” to receive a provisional entry into the race.

Castroneves wanted to earn his spot through qualifying but was caught in an early crash involving eight cars. This knocked his Chevrolet out of the race for repairs, preventing him from securing one of the open qualifying spots.
“Unfortunately, we’re going to have to take the provisional,” Castroneves said. “That’s not what we wanted, but it is what it is. In the end, we have more to learn.”
Bubba Wallace, driving a Toyota for Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing, won the first of two qualifying races, crucial for setting the starting order for the Daytona 500.
“I wanted one of these so bad,” Wallace expressed. “All in all, it was a good day, good night.”
In the first qualifier, reigning Xfinity Series champion Justin Allgaier fought hard to secure the last open spot, outpacing J.J. Yeley. This marks the Cup Series debut for JR Motorsports, owned by two-time Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. The car is backed by a whiskey label from Grammy-winner Chris Stapleton.
Castroneves’ crash makes him the 41st entry in the Daytona 500, creating the largest field since 2015 when there were 43 cars. However, Trackhouse Racing will not receive points or prize money from his participation, meaning all drivers finishing below him will be elevated in the final standings.
Despite the setback, Castroneves had a positive outlook. “I was having a great time,” he said. “Hopefully, the crew can fix the car. I learned so much—there are details that fans don’t see on TV. It’s fascinating, and I love it.”
The provisional entry system has faced some criticism. Seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and 2017 champion Martin Truex Jr. were surprised they weren’t considered for the provisional spot. The rule emerged from new charter agreements teams signed in September, and neither driver was aware of it until after the announcement.
Ultimately, both Johnson and Truex earned their spots in the Daytona 500 through time trials.
Qualifying for the Daytona 500 is unique. Only the front row is set during time trials, where Chase Briscoe secured the pole position alongside Austin Cindric. The two fastest drivers from the nine “open” entries also earn spots, while the remaining two open spots are filled in the qualifying races held the following night.
