SALISBURY — Catawba College has emerged as the winner of the North Carolina Collegiate Hunger Challenge, honored for its innovative approach to tackling food insecurity among students. This statewide competition encourages students to raise awareness and take action on hunger issues in their communities.
Since its inception, the North Carolina Collegiate Hunger Challenge has partnered with Food Lion Feeds and North Carolina Campus Engagement. Together, they empower students to lead initiatives that combat food insecurity across college campuses. From September to December 2025, 14 institutions competed by organizing food drives, running pantry projects, and hosting educational events to raise awareness. Guided by leaders like Hannah Addair and McKenzie Peurifoy, students at Catawba College rolled up their sleeves to drive real change.
McKenzie Peurifoy, a biochemistry major, shared her perspective on the challenge: “I was surprised to learn how often food insecurity on college campuses can appear invisible. This experience allowed me to advocate for students who may struggle to find resources.” She emphasized the importance of Laura’s Place, the campus food pantry, noting that many students were unaware of its existence.
The collaboration with Food Lion Feeds enhanced Catawba’s outreach. Using social media and campus dialogue, they aimed to reduce the stigma around food insecurity and promote a culture of empathy and action. Kevin Durkee, manager of Food Lion Feeds, remarked, “College students show what’s possible when the desire to help others meets determination.”
On February 11, Catawba was awarded $5,000 during a conference aimed at promoting civic engagement. Since 2019, the North Carolina Collegiate Hunger Challenge has contributed over $185,000 to initiatives, equating to more than 1.8 million meals provided across various campuses.
Given the rising rates of food insecurity, studies show that nearly 30% of college students in the U.S. struggle to secure adequate food. These statistics highlight the crucial role student-led initiatives play in addressing such challenges. Catawba’s involvement not only shone a light on the issue but also paved the way for more conversations on campus about making resources more accessible.
As the challenge grows, it not only helps students but also strengthens the community. Programs like Laura’s Place serve as vital resources, making it clear that when students unite for a cause, they can create lasting change.
