Get ready! Maryland’s men’s basketball team is set to take on No. 12 Purdue at the XFINITY Center this Sunday. The game starts at 1:00 PM and will air on CBS. Legendary broadcaster Johnny Holliday will join Chris Knoche and Walt Williams to call the action.

This game also marks the annual Cancer Awareness Day, where the Terps will honor cancer survivors and those currently in the fight. They’ll don special white uniforms with pink accents in support of this cause.

After a tough start, Maryland will play four of their next eight games at home. Fortunately, they’ll only face two teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25: Purdue and No. 5 Nebraska. The rest of the matchups are against teams lower in the conference standings.

A standout performer has been Diggy Coit, who earned several accolades last week, including Big Ten Co-Player of the Week and AP National Player of the Week. He averaged 36.5 points in recent games, lighting it up with a jaw-dropping 13-of-26 from beyond the arc.

Fans were buzzing after Coit scored 43 points against Penn State, setting a new record at the XFINITY Center and nearly matching the program’s all-time scoring record from 1978. He also tied a record with nine three-pointers, contributing to the team’s record-setting 18 made triples in that game.

Looking at history, the Terps have faced Purdue 16 times, with a 6-10 record. Interestingly, they’ve battled closely, with nine of those games decided by five points or fewer. The last encounter saw Maryland defeating the then-ranked No. 3 Purdue, leading to a memorable court storming back in February 2023.

Diggy Coit: A Scoring Sensation

Coit has established himself as a prolific scorer. Head coach Buzz Williams has highlighted his ability to produce “video game numbers.” Coit’s recent 43-point game against Penn State is just one of two 40-point performances this season. He joins an elite group as one of only two players in Maryland history to score over 40 points in a season besides Gene Shue.

Coit’s performance stands out even further when you consider recent trends in college basketball. According to NCAA data, only a few players have achieved multiple 40-point games in a single season over the last two decades. Coit is among them, marking a significant achievement in this competitive landscape.

Team’s Veteran Presence

Solomon Washington is making an impact since returning from injury. With an average of 9.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, he provides a steady presence. His debut against Wagner was solid, with 10 points and six rebounds. He has also secured several double-doubles this season, showcasing his ability to influence games.

Incidentally, Washington aims to average a double-double for the season—a feat that hasn’t been achieved frequently in Maryland’s history.

Buzz Williams: A Proven Leader

Since being appointed head coach in April 2025, Buzz Williams has been focused on building a strong program. He recently celebrated his milestone of 100 career wins, achieving it at three different schools. His experience includes coaching in 23 NCAA Tournament games, and he aims to add more to his legacy at Maryland.

The excitement among fans is palpable. With engaging performances and a solid game plan, the Terps look forward to this matchup against Purdue. Let’s see how they perform!
