Colorado Athletics recently held its Winter Sport Media Day, giving fans a glimpse of the women’s basketball team as they gear up for the 2025-26 season. Head coach JR Payne expressed both excitement and a bit of nervousness about the challenges ahead. With 10 new players on the roster, including five freshmen and five transfer students, this season brings a fresh mix to the team.

Payne has been with Colorado for a decade now, and she emphasizes that despite changes in college athletics—like the introduction of the transfer portal and name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals—her approach remains steady. “We focus on building relationships and fostering toughness,” she explains. This strong foundation helps them navigate the rollercoaster of new arrivals every season.

Newplayer recruitment was strategic, aimed at elevating the team’s defense and athleticism. Payne highlighted key contributions from players like Anaëlle Dutat, Zyanna Walker, and Desiree Wooten, who not only fit well into the team structure but also bring defensive skills that promise to enhance the squad’s overall performance.

Senior forward Jade Masogayo, who made the All-Big 12 Preseason Team, credits her teammates and coaches for boosting her confidence. “I’m playing with more freedom now,” she says, reflecting on her growth since transferring to Colorado.

Another player, Kennedy Sanders, leads by example, focusing on encouraging her teammates without being overly vocal. She believes that their versatility will shine this season. The mix of newcomers and returning players offers a unique blend of talent that could lead to exciting plays on the court.

As they prepare for their first exhibition game on October 29, excitement is building. The Buffs will face challenges right out of the gate, taking on notable opponents like Louisville and competing in the Hawaii North Shore Showcase.

Historically, returning to the Big 12 last year brought mixed results. The team finished with significant wins but faced some tough losses as they adapted back to the competitive landscape.
