CBI Takes Action: Key Charges Filed Against Oxfam India – What You Need to Know!

The CBI has charged Oxfam India and its former CEO, Amitabh Behar, over alleged violations of foreign funding regulations. The charge sheet was submitted to a special court, naming both as accused parties. Behar is currently the executive director of Oxfam International.

This investigation started in April 2023 following a complaint from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The complaint claims that Oxfam India attempted to bypass rules after its FCRA registration expired.

The complaints include evidence from emails found during a tax survey, suggesting that Oxfam India was seeking to pressure the Indian government into renewing its FCRA status through foreign connections. It is alleged that the organization might request assistance from international institutions to influence the Indian government.

Despite these allegations, Oxfam India maintains that it has always followed Indian laws. They state that they have timely filed all necessary returns under the FCRA since their establishment. They also express commitment to cooperating with government inquiries since their registration was not renewed in December 2021.
