Recent reports reveal that the CDC is pausing the publication of research papers for review by the Trump administration. This decision aims to eliminate terms like “gender,” “LGBT,” and “pregnant person” from scientific articles, as outlined in an email to researchers.

Dr. Jeremy Faust’s Substack, Inside Medicine, highlighted that the CDC’s chief science officer instructed researchers to halt all manuscripts currently being revised or in print. The unwanted terms list includes phrases commonly used to discuss demographics, such as “transgender,” “non-binary,” and “assigned male at birth.”
This new order affects any paper linked to CDC scientists. If they co-author a paper with outside researchers, they must remove their names from it.
In line with these directives, the CDC has already changed its website, removing references to gender and transgender identity. This action came after a mandate from the Office of Personnel Management to cease programs that utilize taxpayer funds to promote gender ideology, following an executive order signed by Trump during his inauguration.
The impact of this order could be significant. Many scientific studies use terms related to gender for essential demographic analysis. Faust pointed out that, currently, only one political appointee, acting Director Susan Monarez, is at the CDC, raising questions about oversight. There’s uncertainty about who else can approve papers flagged by this new guideline.
One official expressed concern, asking, “How can one person vet all of this?” This statement captures the challenges the CDC faces as it navigates these political waters while fulfilling its scientific mission.
