New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is visiting Sweden to connect with the Indian community there. He emphasized the importance of involving Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) in the democratic process.
During his visit, Kumar spoke about helpful tools like the Online Voter Registration System and the Electronic Transmission of Postal Ballot Management System (ETPBMS), which are designed to make it easier for overseas voters to participate in elections.
This is Kumar’s first trip to Sweden since he took office, accompanied by senior officials from the Election Commission, including Rakesh Verma and Rahul Sharma.
Kumar is also set to deliver a keynote address at the International IDEA Stockholm Conference on Electoral Integrity, which runs from June 10-12. The event draws interest because it focuses on the complex logistics behind India’s massive elections.
More than 100 participants from about 50 countries will attend, reflecting a growing global interest in effective election management. Kumar’s keynote will highlight India’s leadership in this area and its commitment to global democratic cooperation.
The conference aims to tackle pressing issues like disinformation, digital security, and the role of Artificial Intelligence in elections. These challenges are increasingly relevant in today’s electoral landscape, as seen in recent reports indicating that disinformation has surged during election cycles around the world.
As part of his agenda, Kumar will meet with election officials from nearly 20 countries, including the UK, France, and South Africa. This collaboration underlines India’s dedication to sharing best practices and learning from others in the field.
According to the Election Commission of India, India has been a proactive partner with International IDEA, contributing its experiences and innovations to enhance global electoral integrity. Initiatives like the IIIDEM are becoming crucial for building knowledge and skills in electoral management worldwide.
In a world where democratic processes are constantly evolving, the dialogue at the Stockholm Conference will be vital for shaping the future of elections. As electoral challenges grow more complex, collaboration will be key to maintaining integrity and public trust.
Stay tuned for updates on the discussions taking place during this important event.
