However, the most accepted tale is about a group of high school friends in California, known as “the Waldos.” Back in the 1970s, they used to meet at 4:20 p.m. after school to search for a hidden marijuana patch. Although they never found it, they created a term that has lasted for decades.

The Waldos eventually introduced the term to the music scene through their connection with the Grateful Dead. By the early 1990s, 4/20 had gained enough traction to be mentioned in popular culture, particularly through cannabis magazines. It became a widespread phenomenon, transforming into a holiday celebrated by many.

This year, celebrations showcase creativity. In New York City, the cannabis brand Tokin’ Jew is rolling out a line of kosher-style THC gummies just for Passover. Meanwhile, in West Hollywood, an Easter nug hunt is set to draw around 300 participants, who’ll use a mobile app to explore local dispensaries and engage in fun challenges. The winner gets a $500 cash prize!

Portland’s drag brunch, dubbed “blaze and praise,” takes a different approach. Attendees are encouraged to partake in cannabis before arriving, adding a delightful twist to the usual brunch. The bar owner, Melinda Archuleta, hopes to blend cultural influences in a fun way, saying she’s excited to see what the performers create.

Recent votes in states like Florida and North Dakota have stalled legalization efforts. Moreover, some states are tightening regulations on hemp-derived products, complicating the landscape further.

Federal legalization remains a hot topic. During his campaign, President Trump expressed support for reclassifying marijuana. The Biden administration has made some moves, but cannabis policy hasn’t been prioritized. However, a bipartisan group of senators is advocating for legislation that would enable states to set their own cannabis laws, reflecting a growing recognition of the industry’s importance.

As Charles Alovisetti, a lawyer specializing in cannabis law, points out, continued advocacy is vital for reform. He believes that aligning regulations with broader political goals, like reducing crime, could help push marijuana reform forward.
