Celebrate 50 Years of Musical Excellence: Shepherd School of Music at Rice University Unveils Exciting Anniversary Season Programming

The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University is excited to announce its 2025-26 season, focusing on classical voice performances.

One highlight is Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” R.B. Schlather will direct this enchanting opera, with Louis Lohraseb conducting the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra. Performances are set for October 31 and November 2, 2025.

Another significant event celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Shepherd School. On November 8, 2025, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, a former student, will perform alongside the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra. She will debut a movement from “Another Starry Night,” a new song cycle by Pierre Jalbert, who leads the school’s Composition and Theory program. The full cycle will premiere in the following season.

On November 24, 2025, the Rice Chorale, conducted by Thomas Jaber, will take the stage, showcasing a variety of vocal talents.

In February, on February 1, 2026, the world will see the premiere of “A Joint Interest,” a commission for the 50th anniversary by composer Karim Al-Zand. Directed by Aleko Endowed Artist Paul Curran and conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya, this performance will also feature scenes from contemporary American operas, performed by Shepherd opera students.

Later, the Rice Chorale will perform again on April 13, 2026. The season will conclude with Verdi’s “Falstaff,” directed by Matt Hune. This composition, rich in humor and complexity, will run from April 17 to April 21, 2026, with Harth-Bedoya back at the conductor’s podium.
