Threads of Time, a retro RPG inspired by the classic Chrono Trigger, has unveiled a new gameplay trailer. Developed by Canadian studio Riyo Games, it captures a vibrant time-travel narrative that promises an exciting adventure.
This game was first introduced at the Tokyo Game Show last year, and its latest trailer was featured in the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct. It looks like Riyo Games is making great strides in development.
Players will journey through various epochs, from ancient civilizations to a futuristic cyberpunk world. The game’s visuals echo the stunning HD-2D style found in Octopath Traveler, combining nostalgia with modern flair.
One moment, players might wander through a lively medieval town, battling whimsical creatures. The next, they could find themselves in a rain-soaked metropolis filled with flying cars. The shifting landscapes promise to keep the gameplay fresh and intriguing.
The battle system also stands out. It’s turn-based but has a depth that balances influences from both Octopath and Dragon Quest. Characters interact in a layered environment, with action taking place in the foreground and background, enriching the experience.
Currently, there’s no release date, but it’s expected to launch on PC. The timing is particularly notable as it follows the success of Sea of Stars, another retro RPG that drew inspiration from Chrono Trigger.
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger. Square Enix has hinted at exciting projects in celebration, raising hopes among fans for a remake or remaster. Yet, no firm details have emerged, leaving many eager for news.
As the gaming landscape evolves, Threads of Time could serve as a bridge for fans awaiting new Chrono Trigger experiences. With its unique take on time travel and engaging gameplay, it has potential to carve its own path in the RPG genre.
