The day kicks off with a rally at the State Capitol at 9:30 a.m. Participants will then march to Huston-Tillotson University.

There will be a lively festival at the university, featuring local vendors, live music, and plenty of food to enjoy.

If you’re attending, consider bringing canned goods or non-perishable items for the Central Texas Food Bank.

However, be aware that an Arctic cold front may bring very cold weather. Stay updated on conditions by checking the Austin Area Heritage Council’s social media.

There are also other ways to celebrate Dr. King in Central Texas:

  • Pease Park Conservancy MLK Day Food Drive: From noon to 5 p.m. at Kingsbury Commons (1100 Kingsbury St.), you can donate food, diapers, and hygiene products.
  • Austin Shakespeare MLK Happy Hour: Enjoy free snacks while actor Marc Pouhé reads Dr. King’s powerful words. This event starts at 5:30 p.m. at The Gallery at Chez Zee (5406 Balcones Dr.).
  • San Marcos MLK Celebration and Walk: The day begins at 9:30 a.m. with a wreath-laying ceremony at the LBJ Crossroads Memorial, followed by a walk to the historic courthouse square, ending with a reception at the Dunbar Recreation Center (801 MLK Dr.).
  • Georgetown MLK Day March and Program: Participants will gather at noon at the Williamson County Courthouse, meeting at 11:45 a.m.
