Every year on November 8, we honor first-generation college students during National First-Generation College Celebration. This special event recognizes the achievements of students who are the first in their families to attend college. At the University of Iowa, we extend the celebration to an entire week, from November 3 to 8, filled with activities and events.
Throughout this week, various colleges, departments, and student organizations come together to celebrate. Last year, over 20 events took place, showcasing the strength and resilience of our first-gen students. It’s a time for everyone to recognize and applaud their hard work and determination.
Interestingly, a recent survey found that first-generation students often face unique challenges compared to their peers. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, only about 11% of first-gen students earn a bachelor’s degree within four years. This highlights the importance of support and community during their college journey.

Let’s come together to honor these remarkable students and inspire future generations. November is a great month to celebrate success and community!
