HATTIESBURG, Miss. – William Carey University is having a memorable homecoming celebration this year. Part of that celebration includes a special luncheon for alumni marking their 50-year reunion.

On Friday, former students gathered with current ones, reflecting on their time at the university. During this gathering, 11 alumni received medallions for achieving the impressive milestone of 50 years since their graduation. The honored alumni include:
– Graham Boutwell
– Joseph Byrd
– Christine Cooley
– Teri Eaton
– Sheri Everett
– Bobby Halford
– Myra Hartel
– Valerie Turner Jackson
– Sandra Reeves
– Julie Roth
– Brenda Perrott Williamson
This event allowed former students to reconnect and witness the university’s growth. Boutwell, who graduated in 1975, was pleasantly surprised by the new sign near Highway 49 and the many changes around campus.
Attendees enjoyed a delicious meal and were entertained by the university’s a cappella group, ‘Carey On.’ Lona Barnett, the homecoming queen from 1955, expressed her joy at returning, saying, “Carey was a special place for me, and it still is.”
Homecoming celebrations not only honor alumni but also foster a sense of community. According to a recent survey by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, 49% of alumni feel more connected to their alma mater through events like homecoming.
These gatherings are essential for maintaining lifelong relationships and a sense of belonging. They give alumni the chance to see how their university continues to evolve while cherishing memories from their college days.
