Mumbai Welcomes WAVES 2025: A Celebration of Indian Cinema

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai. The event drew a crowd of global delegates eager to discuss the future of the media and entertainment industry.

During the inauguration, PM Modi paid tribute to five legendary figures in Indian cinema by unveiling special postage stamps. He honored filmmaker Guru Dutt, actress P. Bhanumathi, director Raj Khosla, filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, and music composer Salil Chowdhury. Modi remarked that these icons made significant contributions to Indian cinema, stating, "They transformed Indian cinema with their creative brilliance."

Reflecting on India’s cinematic history, Modi highlighted the release of "Raja Harishchandra," the first feature film directed by Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913. He emphasized how Indian cinema has carried the spirit of the country worldwide, from Raj Kapoor’s influence in Russia to Satyajit Ray’s recognition at Cannes and RRR’s success at the Oscars.

WAVES 2025, themed "Connecting Creators, Connecting Countries," is the first global summit of its kind dedicated to the media and entertainment sector. Over four days, it will host more than 10,000 delegates from over 90 countries, including 350 startups and 300 companies. The schedule features 42 plenary sessions, 39 breakout sessions, and 32 masterclasses covering diverse topics such as film, OTT platforms, gaming, and digital media.

At the event, PM Modi visited the Creatosphere, engaging with winners of the "Create in India" challenges. This initiative saw participation from over 100,000 creators, showcasing India’s potential in fostering creativity. He also praised the Bharat Pavilion, which highlights India’s rich cultural heritage and contemporary innovations.

Another standout feature of WAVES is the WAVES Bazaar, an online global marketplace enabling connections between creators and markets. "This initiative strengthens the creative economy by linking new creators with new markets," Modi stated.

WAVES 2025 is even hosting the Global Media Dialogue for the first time in India, with representatives from 25 countries. The summit aims to unlock a $50 billion market by 2029, positioning India as a key player in the entertainment industry.

As the world turns its eyes to India, the momentum from WAVES promises to elevate creativity and collaboration in the media landscape.
