On Sunday, the Ministry of Environment celebrated National Environment Day. This occasion aims to raise awareness about the importance of environmental issues and the challenges we face.

National Environment Day takes place every January 27. It serves as a reminder for everyone about the need to keep our surroundings clean and healthy.
This year’s theme was “Green and Sustainable Egypt: Towards a Circular Economy and a Fair Green Transformation.” Environment Minister Yasmeen Fouad emphasized the government’s dedication to tackling environmental issues, highlighting that they are crucial for national security.
The recent designation of January 27 as National Environment Day reflects our growing commitment to protecting the environment. Egypt earned recognition for its climate action, ranking second in the Middle East and North Africa according to a German Watch report. Minister Fouad attributed this success to the country’s focused efforts in reducing climate change impacts.
She stated, “This recognition underscores the nation’s dedication to climate mitigation and adaptation strategies.” Egypt recently submitted its first transparency report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, showcasing its progress in cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
The report revealed that Egypt has already met its 2024 goals for cutting emissions in the energy sector. It surpassed its transportation sector targets by 12%.
Minister Fouad stressed the vital role that community involvement plays in achieving a sustainable future. The government is actively working with various groups—like civil society organizations, youth, and academics—to include everyone in the conversation about environmental policies.
At the event, Minister of Local Development Manal Awad praised the Presidential Initiative to Plant 100 Million Trees. This initiative not only enhances green spaces but also improves air quality and helps combat climate change for future generations.
The celebrations included the signing of two cooperation protocols between the Environmental Affairs Agency and other organizations. These agreements focus on promoting environmental awareness, training, and sustainable waste management practices.
