MUNISING, Mich. – Munising Memorial Hospital recently marked National Rural Health Day, celebrating its vital role in the community. Serving around 8,000 people in Alger County, the hospital is a lifeline for many.

Jim Yates, the Manager of the I-REACH Program, highlighted how the hospital addresses healthcare needs for veterans. “In a rural area with no nearby VA services, this clinic fills that gap. We work closely with the VA Community Care Network to ensure veterans receive the care they need,” he explained.

However, rural clinics like Munising Memorial face challenges. Staffing shortages, remote locations, and changes to Medicare can impact their ability to provide care. CEO Wendy Frush urges community members to advocate for their local healthcare services. “Reach out to your elected officials. Let them know that healthcare is not a luxury—it’s a right,” she said.

Despite these hurdles, the dedication of the Munising Memorial staff shines through. Frush described how everyone, from doctors to lab technicians, treats patients like family. “To us, community means family. We look forward to serving you,” she stated.
