With the end of classes and finals approaching, excitement is building for Commencement Weekend, set for May 15-17. President Michael T. Benson is expressing pride in the graduates as he wraps up his first year at the University.
As we gather to celebrate, it’s important to remember that “commencement” means a new beginning. This isn’t just the end of one chapter for our graduates; it’s the start of their journey as part of the Mountaineer alumni family, filled with promise and potential.
Our graduates reflect the hard work and commitment of the entire University community. That was evident when I had the chance to thank some of you personally at the Faculty and Staff Awards last Friday.
Here are a few standout awardees:
- Carol Arantes, a wildlife and fisheries assistant professor, won the Faculty Award for Outstanding Global Contributions.
- Paul M. Martinelli received the inaugural Classified Staff/ACCE Recognition Award.
- A few professors, including Brian Boone and Chris Scheitle, were named Benedum Distinguished Scholars for their academic excellence.
- Catherine Gouge earned the Caperton Award for her exceptional writing instruction.
It was also rewarding to attend the Excellence in Community Engagement Awards, where we celebrated impactful learning and community efforts.
In a world of rapid change, organizations like WVU play a vital role. A recent survey showed that 92% of graduates feel prepared for their careers. This reflects the hard work from faculty and support staff who shaped their educational journey.
As we near the semester’s end, let’s take a moment to appreciate all we’ve achieved together. I encourage everyone to join us on May 20 at Blaney House for a little celebration.
Last week, I also had the honor to be at the White House for the NCAA Championship win celebration of the WVU rifle team. This marks our University’s third visit for NCAA Champions Day and a proud moment for our athletes.
As I wrap up my “Welcome Home Tour,” which started last July, I’ve seen firsthand how WVU impacts local communities. It’s inspiring to witness the transformative effects of education here in West Virginia.
Next, we’ll visit several counties, highlighting our connection to the land and its history. Monongalia County, where WVU is based, has a rich past. Established 250 years ago, it grew from agriculture and coal to become an educational hub with WVU’s founding in 1867.
In the words of Daniel Coit Gilman, who laid the groundwork for modern universities, our mission must adapt to serve our community and future generations. Let’s ensure that WVU continues to thrive and support the needs of West Virginians and beyond.
