Celebrate Success: Valparaiso University’s Inspiring Commencement Ceremony Highlights Achievements in Northwest Indiana

Valparaiso University held its annual commencement ceremonies on May 10, celebrating the achievements of its graduates. Both undergraduate and graduate students received their diplomas in two separate ceremonies. The morning event included students from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Business, while students from the College of Engineering and the College of Nursing and Health Professions graduated in the afternoon.

The guest speaker, Gloria Castillo, founder of CMC Enterprises and former president of Chicago United, inspired graduates with her message on the importance of values. She emphasized, “Honoring your values is never the wrong decision. They will guide you like the North Star.”

Peyton Evans, a business administration major and former member of the women’s soccer team, also addressed her classmates. She urged graduates to reflect on their identities and how college helped them discover more about themselves. Peyton contributed to her team’s success, winning both conference and NCAA tournament games in 2023.

Madison Britt Boor, captain of the Valpo swim team, shared her thoughts about graduation. “Today isn’t just about leaving Valpo; we’re taking our memories and experiences with us,” she said. Madison earned honors like the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete recognition, showcasing her commitment to both academics and athletics.

The impact of graduation extends beyond education. According to a recent survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, around 1.9 million students received their bachelor’s degrees in the U.S. in 2022, highlighting the growth and potential of new graduates entering various fields.

In today’s job market, having a degree is important, but so is the ability to adapt and uphold strong values. Experts in career development suggest that the combination of skills and personal integrity is vital in today’s fast-paced world.
