Celebrate World Ozone Day: Discover How LIFE Fuels Innovative Solutions for a Greener Planet!

International efforts to protect the ozone layer have made significant progress since the Montreal Protocol took effect. This agreement, established over four decades ago, aimed to phase out substances that harm the ozone layer. Recently, focus has shifted to Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which were added to the Protocol in 2016. While HFCs don’t deplete the ozone layer, they are incredibly potent greenhouse gases, trapping heat thousands of times more than carbon dioxide.

The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol is a major step in reducing HFC use by over 80% in the next 30 years. This reduction could prevent up to 0.5 °C of global warming, with countries committing to decrease their HFC usage gradually.

As we celebrate World Ozone Day, it’s a perfect moment to highlight a LIFE project that’s innovating in this area. The LIFE-4-Fgases project, worth EUR 1.4 million, is set to run until September 2025. It combines new technologies to recover used HFCs from refrigerant blends, significantly cutting emissions and supporting the goals of the Kigali Amendment.

This project uses a unique system called hybrid adsorption and membrane technology, which allows for more efficient recovery and reuse of HFCs. Conventional methods can be less effective, especially as alternatives are not always available yet.

Javier Pinedo, Chief Research Officer at Apria Systems, emphasizes the importance of this technology: “Membrane technology allows the effective separation of common refrigerants.” The plan is to scale this up and explore its potential in the market.

One crucial aspect of this project is testing the technology in real-world conditions. Ambigroup, a project partner, is hosting a demonstration at their recycling facility in Lisbon, Portugal. Rocardo Diogo from Ambigroup believes this solution could revolutionize the separation of HFCs coming from recovery processes, making it useful in both refrigeration and air conditioning.

The LIFE-4-Fgases project is one of many efforts during a time when climate change is pressing. It’s aligned with the European Union’s goals for sustainable practices, helping citizens adapt to a warming world.
